Chapter Nineteen

I woke up before my alarm the next day. Pale predawn light filtered in through the windows as I slipped into my clothes and headed to the kitchen. I automatically moved to the coffee machine to get it started. Must have coffee. No telling how much of the magical elixir I would need to get through this day, but it was going to be a lot. With only this day and the following left to prep, I knew it would be a bear of a day.

I moved to the kitchen window and for a moment I hesitated, recalling how looking out on the lawn on Tuesday morning had led to Trisha’s lifeless body. It gave me a shiver, but I glanced quickly out now, wanting to make sure there were no more surprises waiting for me this morning.

Thankfully, all was still and tranquil, as far as I could tell. No horrific scenes to be found today. I let out a breath, relieved.

After setting breakfast out for the guests, I turned to my wedding tasks and got right to work. As far as I knew, Marlene was still in jail, but I was stubbornly carrying on with my cooking plans, knowing that it would be better to be prepared for a wedding that didn’t happen than be unprepared for a wedding that did. I began assembling my ingredients for the artichoke dip that would be part of the appetizer course to be served while the guests waited for the wedding party to take pictures. There would be an open bar and I planned to hire two local people to help me serve the food during the event. If I knew weddings, I knew that this course was often the most important, especially with an open bar. After the appetizer and bar course, there would be a significant amount of the guests who wouldn’t even pay attention to the main course or the cake. So I wanted to make sure this course was the one that really wowed.

As I chopped artichoke hearts and grated Parmesan, I thought again of Greg and Trisha fighting over money. Something about what Aunt Meg had said the night before about the financial statement I found at Trisha’s house nagged at me. I could have sworn he said he didn’t have that kind of insurance, but maybe he was talking about something different. It was strange, though, that their admin Stacy had heard Greg and Trisha fighting over the insurance, too.

What if Greg had been doing something illegal and Trisha knew about it and had confronted him? The note we’d found at her place could have come from him. I hadn’t given it much thought before, what with the focus on Marlene and the mystery affair, but maybe Greg deserved more scrutiny over Trisha’s death than I’d realized up to now. I wondered if Ryan had looked into him at all. But of course, any sheriff worth his salt would have looked into the business partner right away.
